REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT BETWEEN THEORY AND PRACTICE: POPULATION, REGION AND SAFETY

Pardubice: 30 May 2013

This conference was organised within the 5th annual cycle of regional conferences "Regional development between theory and practice", hosted by the Institute of Regional and Security Sciences, Faculty of Economics and Administration, University of Pardubice, in collaboration with the non-governmental organisation Civitas per Populi o.s., the East-Bohemian branch of the Czech Geographical Society, and the College of Regional Development. Personal patronage of the conference was assumed by Ing. Oldřich Vlasák, Vice President of the European Parliament; MUDr. Štěpánka Fraňková, Mayor of Pardubice; and PaedDr. Jindřich Vedlich, Ph.D, Deputy Mayor of Hradec Králové responsible for city development. The conference was also attended by RNDr. Josef Postránecký, Head of the Regional Policy Development and Strategy Department, Ministry of Regional Development, and RNDr. Miloslav Novák of the Environment Ministry.

The conference was divided into two blocks. The first block was devoted to new theoretical and practical findings and solutions in research into regional safety and public safety. Global and regional problems of development and safety were discussed within the second block.

The focus of the conference was on safety. Safety has been the primary goal of the building of towns since the oldest times, concentrating on the building of various construction and spatial elements aimed at protecting the citizens and property against external enemies. "The fact that no stone city walls around our towns are needed any more does not imply that our cities and towns and, actually, the entire cultural landscape need no protection or protective elements", says Doc. Ing. arch. Vladimíra Šilhánková, Ph.D., professional guarantor of the conference.

"Today's weapons and fighting methods, as well as the climate, are developing rapidly, and the question remains as to whether our means of protection keep abreast or even develop faster where possible", she adds on the subject of the conference.

Among the contributions presented at the conference were, for instance: Safety of the regions and of nature protection in the shadow of climatic change; The concept of regional resilience within the economic depression context; and Experience from humanitarian work in Chad.

As a side event, an exhibition was opened and the European Commission programme EUROSHA - mapping of four African countries for humanitarian purposes was presented with the contribution of Mgr. Kateřina Struhová, project participant in the mapping of one of the countries – Chad.

Scientific conference
FACTORS, LIMITS AND OPPORTUNITIES IN REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT

Prague: College of Regional Development, 25 February 2013.

The aim of the conference was to draw attention to regional development problems at a time when other topics seem more important. The scope of the conference was based on the belief that any policy – macroeconomic as well as sectoral – usually has its regionally differentiated impacts, both favourable and unfavourable.

The target auditorium comprised teachers from universities dealing with public administration issues, postgraduate students specialising in regionalistics, and journalists who write for specialised periodicals and are interested in relations between conventional regionalistics topics and the reality of our regions. For further conference details visit this website.
